Drawing on the reflexive sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, Bourdieu considers the experience of time spent in unfamiliar cities and cultural settings as a formative pathway to critical societal awareness. For Pierre Bourdieu it was Algiers in the 1950s/60s; for Morgan Quaintance, in this work, it is Chicago in the 1980s. Bourdieu places viewers in the compelling centre of the images, signs, symbols and social impressions that created insight into the structural nature, and power dynamics of culture and society.
